University of Wyoming (UW)

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

At the University of Wyoming, students have access to "a great education for a low, affordable cost." Many students say the school's size is perfect: it's big enough to have over 80 majors and "high-grade faculty" to back them up, but still "small enough to be able to build meaningful relationships with other students and professors." UW "works hard to provide as many resources as possible," which can be seen in the "many undergraduate research opportunities" as well as "great scholarships for studying abroad." Between "good academic advisors" and "always [available] tutoring help," there's an appreciable feeling "that students come first." This means that teachers are "willing to help you in any way you need," and so while they "demand excellence," the overall learning environment is "pleasant as well as challenging." Students "actually look forward" to attending class and say that instructors are "very knowledgeable" and lead "meaningful discussions." Overall, professors do a good job "presenting the material clearly" and making it "really interesting." If students need extra support, the professors are "available for any questions" and "always happy to talk to you."

06. Student Body

What students say:

Most students at the University of Wyoming are active and share a love for the outdoors. It's a love that's about both "having fun and enjoying the natural beauty of Wyoming" and "also caring for and helping preserve the serene landscape." Nearly 60% of undergraduates are from Wyoming and many are from Colorado (though there are students from all 50 states and many countries), and their school pride unites them; everyone "loves wearing their brown and gold." Under that banner is a "wide variety of students," from those with a "deeply ingrained love for cowboy culture" to those who ride unicycles and play bagpipes. On the whole, people are "warm-hearted individuals" who are "very open-minded" and "non-judgmental," which means it's "easy to make friends" and "a safe zone where students are able to express their thoughts and ideas." It's a place where you can spot "the passion that accompanies each major." Walking around campus, you'll see "students stop and gather leaves on their walk to class, watch the wildlife, ... or skip, sing and act on their way to class."

08. Campus Life

What students say:

Students describe the school's scenic location poetically, pointing to the "vivid colors of the clear sky" and noting that "so much time is spent outside exploring" through activities like hiking, mountain biking, skiing, camping, hunting, and fishing. As one student puts it, "If it can be done outside, there are people here that will do it." Sports is also big, with games described as "always enjoyable to watch," so much so that it seems "everyone in the state comes to support our teams." The school is "constantly bringing in musicians, comedians, magicians, and other performers." Students say the "gym and recreational center is top-notch," and the library is a popular spot where people work well into the night (as one student explains, "Food and drinks are allowed in so people can get quite comfortable"). When students have some downtime, they can go into Laramie, which offers an "adorable downtown life" alongside staples like theaters, "a wide variety of restaurants," and "bars and [clubs] for the occasional night out." As one student puts it, "There is always something going on, whether on campus or off campus, as long as you're willing to find it."
