01. What the School is Known For

From the School

Saint Louis University was founded in 1818 as the first university west of the Mississippi River. At the core of this diverse community of scholars is SLU's service-focused mission, which prepares students to make the world a better, more just place.

WORLD-CLASS: SLU is a Catholic, Jesuit research university, highly ranked by the Princeton Review and by U.S. News & World Report.

SLU boasts 15 academic programs in the top 50 in their fields and several in the top 10, along with accolades for campus sustainability efforts, military-friendliness and as a "best value" in private education. SLU is also the first Jesuit university to receive the Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award.

URBAN AND INTERNATIONAL: With two dynamic, urban campuses in St. Louis, Missouri, and Madrid, Spain the university is home to nearly 13,000 students from 50 states and 82 countries. SLU's international focus and 50+ study abroad programs invite students to engage with and learn from the global community. The St. Louis campus is a welcoming residential oasis located steps from some of the region's top art and culture venues, while SLU-Madrid puts students in the heart of one of Europe's most vibrant, history-rich cities.

HANDS-ON: One of only nine Catholic universities with a "higher" or "highest" research activity designation, SLU empowers students to collaborate with faculty mentors on groundbreaking research and gain hands-on experience. From developing systems to filter arsenic pollution out of water to exploring innovative ways to get fresh produce into low-income neighborhoods, students don't just contemplate solutions to the day's most challenging problems &mdash they actively work to make those solutions reality.

SERVICE-MINDED: Jesuit tradition inspires the SLU community's commitment to service and social justice. Designated a "character-building college," SLU was also the first institution named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for nine consecutive years. Students cook meals in the Campus Kitchen, volunteer at student-run medical and law clinics, and work alongside dozens of community organizations to serve their neighbors.

A SLU education gives graduates not only the skills to succeed in their careers but also the wisdom to lead lives of meaning and purpose. SLU alumni have become mayors of major cities, helped put men on the moon, directed Hollywood blockbusters and worked side-by-side with Mother Theresa.

From The School

Students participate in more than 175 clubs, honor societies and service organizations; 18 NCAA Division I teams; intramural sports; and community service efforts that see 85 percent of SLU students volunteering at least once during the academic year.

Talent and commitment matter at SLU, and high levels of energy and dedication exist in everything Saint Louis University students pursue: academic societies, athletics, performing arts and media groups, student government, cultural and political organizations, and fraternities and sororities. SLU's multicultural organizations highlight and celebrate the diversity of the University community, and a variety of faith-based organizations support and challenge students as they explore their own faith traditions.

What students say:

The SLU community hails from 87 different countries, and many students take pride in the diversity celebrated on the SLU campus: "We host a lot of international students as well as students from different socioeconomic, cultural, and geographical backgrounds. I love getting to learn about other students' experiences and how they differ from mine." Even with so many different backgrounds, a shared passion for enriching the "mind, body, heart, and spirit" unites the student body. "I've found that the overwhelming majority of my peers are supportive of me as an academic and as a whole person, emotionally and spiritually." One first-year student explains, "My peers are helpful, friendly, positive, happy, and ignited with a passion for social justice." Overall, these ambitious students "are here to create a better future."

What students say

As one of the first institutions of higher learning west of the Mississippi River, Saint Louis University lives up to its over 200-year academic legacy: "At SLU, there is a lot of emphasis on academic success, and the very rigorous classes make it imperative that you focus." This mid-sized university offers a whopping 97 bachelor degree programs, each featuring a variety of large-lecture and small-discussion based formats, and even hybrids of the two. Impressively, students suggest that even in large courses, they were "able to connect with not only other classmates and teaching assistants, but...with my professors." Other students revel in the way programs make learning concrete, whether that's from a nursing student getting "so many clinical hours in very diverse fields" or "lots of opportunities to perform independent guided research as an undergraduate." The list goes on, citing classes that utilize "flight simulators" and backing up the study of world religions by visiting "a Hindu temple, Muslim mosque, and Buddhist meditation center."

Courses may be challenging, but students point to the personal support they receive from their instructors: "I truly believe that the professors I've encountered at Saint Louis University want their students to succeed. The Dean of Students is a wonderful individual and a great resource, and SLU's President is incredible," raves one second-year student. "I have never felt more supported by academic staff ever," adds another. "I have always felt like a student AND a person in my classrooms, and teachers are always one email or text away." As one third-year puts it, "SLU actively does its best to ensure that students succeed academically, professionally, and personally." This extends not just to the academics to but also to "generous financial aid" and professional resources in tutoring, time-management, and career: "With these, I could handle anything that college would throw at me."

Location

At Saint Louis University, students are in the center of everything, whether studying at SLU's Midtown St. Louis campus or SLU's international campus in Madrid, Spain.

ST. LOUIS: SLU's beautiful urban campus in Midtown St. Louis stretches across more than 230 acres of lush greenery, flowers and fountains. Students and visitors alike appreciate the unique vibe of a close-knit community nestled in the middle of a dynamic city.

The St. Louis metro region boasts nearly 3 million people. The city's mix of Midwestern friendliness and large-city amenities has helped St. Louis garner its ranking as one of the best cities for young professionals. In 2019, St. Louis grabbed the No. 1 spot on 'Forbes' "Happiest Cities for Job-Seeking Grads" list. The city also is home to the iconic Gateway Arch and a variety of cultural, historical and sporting attractions.

Students love cheering on the SLU Billikens. The only NCAA Division I school in town, SLU fields teams in 11 different sports, and the Billikens have earned many accolades, including 10 NCAA men's soccer championships &mdash more than any other team in the United States.

MADRID: In 1967, SLU became one of first American universities to establish a foreign campus. Each semester, 800+ students from 50+ countries pursue their studies at SLU-Madrid. Southern Europe's greenest city, Madrid offers refreshing parks and a beautiful riverside promenade. The historic central district is easy to cross on foot, and the barrios popular among students are only a few metro stops away &mdash Madrid's mass transit system is among the best in the world.

Campus Facilities & Equipment

During the past three decades, Saint Louis University improvements and expansions have totaled approximately $850 million. In recent years, the University completed some of the most significant building projects in its history, including the $82 million Edward A. Doisy Research Center, which offers SLU's innovative researchers a world-class facility.

SLU's on-campus housing options include two residence halls, reflecting a nearly $115 million investment in student housing. On track for a 2020 completion, the University is adding 10,000 square feet of new state-of-the-art research space to campus in the Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Building.

Also on campus is the 10,600-seat Chaifetz Arena, which is the home of Billiken basketball and also hosts many of the country's top entertainment acts, and SLU's 70,000-square-foot Center for Global Citizenship. Students can enjoy countless recreational activities at the university's 120,000-square-foot Simon Recreation Center, which features indoor basketball and handball courts, a bouldering wall and an indoor pool.

Off-Campus Opportunities

ST. LOUIS: Midtown St. Louis offers access to affordable living as well as the excitement of the Grand Center arts district, the cultural heart of St. Louis. The booming performing arts neighborhood features opportunities to experience world-class art, theater, dance and music just steps away from SLU's campus.

Minutes away by car, bus or light rail train, students can explore Forest Park, the 1904 World's Fair site that's larger than even New York City's Central Park and home to the city's world-class art museum, zoo, science center and history museum &mdash all free to the public. Check out the Delmar Loop, one of the "10 Great Streets in America," or head to "The Hill," a nationally noted neighborhood for authentic Italian cuisine, including St. Louis' famous toasted ravioli. Then go downtown to catch a game. St. Louis is noted for being one of the nation's best sports cities, and residents root for the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, St. Louis Blues hockey team, and a bevy of independent sports teams.

MADRID: The city of Madrid is home to 230,000 university students. It's a cosmopolitan capital, a metropolis alive with learning and all that Spanish life has to offer, from flamenco shows to late-night tapas.

Madrid offers cultural experiences to rival any city in Europe, including a Royal Palace, a train station designed by Eiffel, countless theaters, museums and glorious churches. Gorgeous fountains with splashing waters can be found at the intersections of the city's grand, tree-lined avenues, and the city's beautiful parks are ideal for weekend picnics or morning runs.

What students say:

Saint Louis University looks for well-rounded students, and to that end offers a robust suite of extracurricular activities and opportunities for service. Among student favorites are the theater program, music program, mock trial, sporting events, and student government. One student enjoys the Micah Program "where we serve [the] community as tutors for elementary-aged kids," and the Billiken Success Program "where we help with new-student events." Warm weather brings even more opportunities for students to come together, "When the weather is nice students will hang hammocks from the trees on campus... They'll play frisbee on the quad or sit with friends and talk in the shade. Our campus comes alive when the weather is warm." Students also remind us that "Saint Louis University is known not only for its large STEM programs, but for having ... great soccer and basketball teams."

What students say

SLU students are looking for “careers that strive to improve our society and our own wellbeing.” The faculty is more than willing to help students outside of established class or office hours, and many offer “valuable career advice, support, and connections.” Career Services invites students to drop into the Career Lab or utilize a variety of online material to prepare them for the workforce. In addition to PowerPoints on “Adulting” or “From Backpack to Briefcase: Expectations for a New Professional,” Career Services releases audio and video career development content on their podcast The Launch Pod and YouTube channel SLUcareers, respectively. Internships, jobs, and employer campus visits are posted on Handshake, and students can network with alumni through SLUConnections or discover opportunities abroad with Interstride and GoinGlobal. And in anticipation of high-stakes interviews, the mock interview tool BigInterview provides virtual coaching to students that is tailored to their fields of interest and experience levels. Saint Louis University graduates surveyed by PayScale.com report a median starting salary of $63,500, and 59% of graduates find meaning in their work.

01. Overview
