From the School

Established in 1851, Ripon College is a national leader in liberal arts and sciences education and Wisconsin's best-value private college, devoted to ensuring every student realizes their unique potential. Students receive a top-notch private education at a net price similar to a public state school. Ripon's five-course Catalyst curriculum is designed to provide the essential skills sought after by today's employers while allowing maximum freedom to choose their own path of study. The core requires only 20 credits and upon completion each student earns a Concentration in Applied Innovation. This one-of-a-kind academic flexibility offers the opportunity to complete multiple majors and minors, engage in experiential study, play sports and hold internships – all in four years. Students are overwhelmingly satisfied with the amount of personalized attention they receive from devoted faculty and staff throughout their time on campus. Within six months of graduation, 98 percent of alumni are employed, in graduate school or student teaching.

Ripon is a member of the prestigious Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM). We compete athletically as part of the Midwest Conference and offer 21 NCAA Division III varsity teams. Our new $23.5 million Willmore Center provides students with state-of-the-art facilities to train and work out, and it boasts the best NCAA indoor track in Wisconsin. To find out more, visit ripon.edu/willmore-center.

Ripon has a student-to-faculty ratio of 14 to 1, and the average class size is fewer than 20 students. As a matter of fact, 76 percent of classes at Ripon have fewer than 20 students and 92 percent of classes have fewer than 30 students.

From The School

From pre-professional programs to paintballing, Ripon College hosts more than 60 student-run clubs and organizations. Students at Ripon are encouraged to lead the programs, supported by the Student Senate's activity fee. This allows students to collaborate together in conceiving, organizing, marketing and developing unique activities.

In addition, Ripon offers a variety of intramural sports throughout the year, including: kickball, dodgeball, flag football, indoor soccer, inner tube water polo, basketball, bowling, volleyball and aerobics.

Ripon's NCAA Division III Intercollegiate Teams compete in the Midwest Conference:

Men's varsity sports: baseball, basketball, cross-country, cycling, football, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field.

Women's varsity sports: basketball, cross-country, cycling, dance, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball.

What students say:

A typical Ripon student is described as "laid-back and friendly." One student cautions, "You have to plan extra time in between classes because you're guaranteed to be stopped by someone you know along the way to talk for a few minutes." Students are "outgoing, personable, and motivated," "involved in multiple clubs," and may "hold more than one internship at a time. From Student Senate to Ultimate Frisbee to volunteering in the community, there is never a lack of activities in which one can participate." Students are "always looking for something new and exciting to do, and [are] ready to volunteer their time and energy to someone in need."

Admissions

From the School:

The faculty committee on academic standards establishes the criteria for admission. The school considers a variety of factors. An admission application and secondary school record are required for admission while standardized test scores (SAT or ACT), recommendations, a written essay, and extracurricular or community service activities also may be considered. Ripon's admission process reflects the personal attention students can expect to receive during their college careers, and applicants are encouraged to provide any additional information that they consider helpful.

Ripon encourages applications from those students who are best prepared to benefit from and contribute to the academic and extracurricular programs that it offers. In evaluating applications, attention is paid to evidence of academic achievement, as indicated both by the distribution of courses taken in secondary school and by performance in those courses.

The faculty committee on academic standards establishes the criteria for admission. Ripon is test-optional. We will consider test scores if you elect to submit them.

From the School

Our innovative five-course curriculum, Catalyst, began rolling out to the first-year class during the fall semester of 2016. Catalyst is designed to provide the essential skills sought after by today's employers while allowing maximum freedom to choose your own path of study. This one-of-a-kind academic flexibility gives Ripon students the opportunity to complete multiple majors and minors, engage in experiential study, play sports and hold internships – all in four years.

Ripon's liberal arts curriculum introduces students to a wide variety of disciplines. About 40 percent of our students complete double or triple majors, while some create special self-designed majors. Hallmarks of a Ripon education are excellent communications skills, both written and oral; critical-thinking and problem-solving skills; and the opportunity to explore serious research pursuits alongside faculty as an undergraduate, no matter what your major.

A Ripon education will take you anywhere! You could study psychology and play basketball at Ripon, and then become a seven-time Grammy Award winner like jazz singer Al Jarreau (1962). You could become a Nobel Prize winner in economics like Oliver Williamson (1954). You could guide the space shuttle into orbit like Jeff Bantle (1980), a chief flight director with NASA, or become an international opera star like Gail Dobish (1976). Perhaps you'll set records in medical science like neonatologist Dr. John Muraskas (1978), who is on record for saving the world's smallest premature baby, or cover world events, like Richard Threlkeld (1959), former Moscow correspondent for CBS News. You could make your mark in the world of entertainment like Harrison Ford (1964), Spencer Tracy (1924) or Justin Neibank (1978). Or perhaps you'll end up studying at University of Oxford in Great Britain as a Rhodes Scholar like Zach Morris (2002), who also found time to play touch football with former President Bill Clinton and spend an evening at Buckingham Palace with Queen Elizabeth II.

What students say

Described as a "close-knit community," "Ripon is a place where a student's best interest matters; all other agendas are secondary." One student chose Ripon because, "I was looking for a liberal arts school that allowed me to do the things I like, namely, be involved in multiple student groups, study abroad, and take classes in different fields, all of which I have been able to do at Ripon." The "quiet beauty," "welcoming nature of the campus," along with "small class sizes and a lot of personal attention from professors" create a "friendly, home-away-from-home atmosphere." Students appreciate the education they are receiving and how it prepares them for a productive life after college. The school's motto, "more together" "is exactly what our school is all about; becoming something more with the help of those here to guide us." "Ripon College prepares students to be productive, service-minded leaders who are ready and willing to influence the direction of our nation's future." "Ripon College is not all about sitting in a classroom listening to lectures and taking notes; it's about teaching us to become more educated in the world around us and helping us to develop the skills needed to succeed." "The hands-on, experiential, servicelearning projects have been particularly valuable for my own personal growth and for preparing me for life after college." Another student agrees, saying, "Ripon is a prime example of a college with a positive and supportive living and learning community." "Ripon professors provide an interesting and intellectually challenging environment for students to discuss and to learn." Students say, Ripon is an "amazing community of learners and educators who support one another" and a "unique institution that helps ordinary people uncover their extraordinary potential to do great things." Professors "are not just teachers, but mentors!" Scholarships make a Ripon College education possible for some that otherwise could not attend. One student says, "They offered me a great scholarship and were really willing to work with me to make my college education affordable."

With its "tight-knit and welcoming community," Ripon conveys "a friendly environment conducive to learning, fun, and overall personal growth." It is "not uncommon to sit down to lunch with a professor, or even go over to their house for tea." Life at Ripon has proven blissful for one student who now says, "I cannot remember a time when I wanted to be anywhere else." Besides a "strong academic core," Ripon College has "many successful sports teams," and Greek life "is abundant." Greeks host events and are a big part of many students' life. Partying "is evident but not huge by any respect." "Since Ripon College is in a small town, the college sets up a lot of events on weekends for us to take part in!" "The small-town feel of Ripon forces you sometimes to create your own fun, which usually makes for the best memories." "Being close to several metropolitan areas (Chicago, Milwaukee, Madison, and the Twin Cities), there is rarely a weekend when people are not getting off campus to go explore." But if you are looking for snow days to figure into your schedule, then Ripon may not be for you "because most professors will keep classes going even in negative temperatures with two feet of snow."

01. Overview

Members of the student body, faculty and staff are issued a G Suite account that offers a variety of productivity tools (Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, Hangouts) to enhance campus collaboration and communication. Multi-functional devices (MFDs) are located in every academic and administrative building to service the campus printing, copying and scanning needs. The College also has new 3D printers that several faculty have incorporated into their course curricula.

Open-use computer labs are located across campus, offering both Windows and Mac OS devices, projectors and MFDs.

Ripon College has partnered with Apogee to provide a cutting-edge cable TV/video solution. With the revolutionary IPTV service, Stream2, students can view HD content live, on demand or recorded (20 hours of DVR storage per user) on their laptops, tablets and smartphones.

Library staff provide friendly, efficient circulation, reference, instruction and interlibrary loan services that aid in research. The library also houses the College archives, a computer lab, digital media stations and more than 25 online databases. Library holdings include access to more than 300,000 physical and electronic books, as well as 55,000 periodicals.

C.J. Rodman Center for the Arts is home to a theater with an advanced computerized lighting system, a newly renovated recital hall with one of only 50 existing Bedient organs, an art gallery, a high-tech lab and a sculpture garden.

Off-Campus Opportunities

Ripon College offers three-week Liberal Arts In Focus courses in May and August. Taught in short, intensive blocks, In Focus courses are designed as immersion experiences to provide a bridge between the theory and content of disciplines. Recent courses have included history lessons in Italy; intensive biology field studies in Costa Rica and the Wilderness Field Station near Ely, Minnesota; and a unique English course in Great Britain covering children's fantasy literature from Beatrix Potter to Harry Potter.
