01. Overview

What the school is known for:

Students of all disciplines at Loyola University Chicago are given every opportunity to follow what interests them and to "build an education that will serve them well in the future." To that end, Loyola's Jesuit ideals yield "rigorous and fascinating" programs that are "developing intellectual and socially responsible students" and preparing them both for careers and "being aware of problems around us." The offering of "significant financial assistance and plenty of scholarships" helps, as do specializations like Loyola's intensive January term, where students have the freedom to do a deep dive into the subject of their choice.

The school's prime lakeside location, just eight miles north of downtown Chicago, "allows Loyola to attract top-notch faculty." Those professors then "find a good balance in their teaching methods that allows students to engage the material" utilizing "connections and opportunities," such as bringing in "business professionals to relate our classroom material to the real world." One student states: "The majority of the professors [are] excellent," while another confesses to having "several professors who I would go out of my way to take again." Coursework itself is "challenging, but not overbearing," keeping with the "wellknown academic integrity of the school."

08. Campus Life

What students say:

Life at Loyola "provides the best of both worlds: an integrated campus and a taste of the city life." On campus, the vibe is "very relaxed, a sort of oasis in a bustling city." The classic brick buildings are "gorgeous," and the grounds boast a beach on Lake Michigan, so "clearly, it does not feel much like a city most of the time." There are over 250 student-run clubs and organizations on campus, and student athletes compete in 15 Division I sports. Informal coffee chats, chess workshops, and Latin music ensembles can all be found on campus throughout any given week. Off campus, central Chicago is "a gold mine," and for some "the biggest hobby around here is exploring Chicago. We go out every weekend, just looking for things to do and always finding them." Some describe Loyola's "social atmosphere" itself as a little "dull," though others rave about getting to "go on trips that involve doing out-of-the-ordinary activities." Overall, students appreciate the balance of fun and preparation that Loyola provides: "What's great about Loyola is that it is very future focused, but it never forgets about the present either."
