Kentucky Wesleyan College (KWC)

Black Pinpoint 3000 Frederica Street | Owensboro, KY | 42301

01. Overview

What the school is known for:

Methodist-affiliated Kentucky Wesleyan College affords students “a great Christian atmosphere” that “helps you grow into a moral and well-educated adult. KWC offers a “small college experience” complete with “small classes,” plenty of “scholarship opportunities,” and a career-oriented liberal arts program offering a “broad range of majors.” The popular business administration and management program offers a ton of valuable internships. “The campus is a very tight-knit place.” “You have the feeling of actually belonging and that you do matter[s], whereas in some larger schools there are just too many people.” The “enthusiastic” professors “are wonderful.” “They are very caring individuals” who “go above and beyond what could be expected of them.” “They also expect a lot out of their students,” although this is balanced by their efforts to “make time for students who are struggling.” “Administrators are helpful and almost always accessible,” and there is a conspicuous “lack of red tape.” Although it “gets nothing done fast,” administrators, as well as “the cleaning ladies” and “the cafeteria staff,” “actually care” and “get to know you.” Campus technology is frustrating; the Internet is “cripplingly slow.”

06. Student Body

What students say:

KWC’s “generally normal,” “regular kids” are “nice” and “athletic.” There are “not many nontraditional students, minority students, or low-income students.” Certainly, there are “not a lot of ‘punk’ types.” “Kentucky Wesleyan pretty much has two types of students,” observes a first-year student: “athletes and the rest.” Athletes come from a lot of different backgrounds. “The rest of the student body is pretty much made up of very religious White students” “from the local area,” who “enrolled in college right out of high school,” explains a senior. They come from “middle-class” families and many “are on scholarship.” AT KWC, “Many students are religious,” but “A large majority come from different denominations. However, if a student is atheist or otherwise religiously affiliated, no prejudices occur.”

08. Campus Life

What students say:

“The campus isn’t very big” but it’s “safe.” “The food tastes good only during admissions events, and then it takes a nosedive.” Intramural sports are popular. “Many of the students here are athletes and very active.” “Each Tuesday there is a movie shown on campus for free.” There are “concerts, comedians, and other entertainment once a week.” “The library is a hangout place.” KWC “isn’t really a party campus,” though. It’s “a Methodist institution that wishes it [were] more Methodist, but its students wish that it [weren’t] so Methodist.” Greek life exists but it is reportedly “pretty lame.” “When guys on my hall get bored, we’ll play any sport that has no business being played inside,” claims one student. “Golf is my personal favorite because it’s so wildly dangerous.” Believe it or not, the surrounding town of Owensboro “is a great city to be in,” according to a sophomore. “There are several bars located in the area and a couple of clubs.” “There is always something to do.” Still, “life isn’t as fast-paced as it is in the big city.” When road trips become necessary, Louisville and Nashville are nearby.
