What students say:

Hound Nation "is like no other" in terms of community and manners, and everyone is "courteous and [will] hold doors open or lend you a calculator in class if your forgot yours." According to their peers, students tend to be "generally middle-class Caucasians [who] are heterosexual" and the school has "a very conservative feel." While the school itself is described as "very Catholic," students qualify this as meaning that most undergraduates "come from Catholic upbringings or have attended Catholic school but are not necessarily religious." The biggest separation between students seems to be whether they're athletes or not, but even in this case, everyone remains "generally happy" and "very sociable and approachable," with no airs put on. In short, people here "genuinely care about each other and it makes for a wonderful experience."

Admissions

From the School:

Application Review Process:

The Admissions Committee understands that grading standards vary from school to school, or from one course to another. Class rank provides some context in which to place the grades of students applying from a given school. Some schools also provide grade distribution charts. Finally, the Admissions Committee also considers whether the applicant's grade-point average or rank-in-class is weighted or unweighted.

The number of solid academic courses, including the number of honors or Advanced Placement-level courses, are considered during the application review process. Submission of standardized test scores (SAT-1 or ACT) is optional and applicants who choose not to submit SAT or ACT test scores will not be penalized in the review for admission.

Application Requirements:

A completed Common Application
An official high school transcript including senior grades
A letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher
Standardized test scores (optional). Should you want your test scores included in your application review, the school code for the SAT is 3009 and the ACT code is 1782. Test scores must be submitted from the testing center.

What students say

Curiosity, faith, and learning are cornerstones of an Assumption University education, which "helps foster well-rounded, creative, intelligent and caring young adults to be successful and morally sound in their future endeavors." The Catholic school's curriculum begins with the Foundations Program, which encourages self-exploration and introspection to help students discover who they want to become; this is achieved through "service, meaningful discussions, and liberal arts classes." To help students make the transition from high school to college, all first-years also participate in COMPASS (Common Pursuit of Academic and Social Success), a semester-long program. Assumption is a "very welcoming and inclusive institution" that focuses both on education and "core values." Experiential learning is emphasized, with the idea that students "receive a greater impact" through the application of skills via service learning, study abroad (the school has a campus in Rome), and internships; campus jobs represent another avenue for experience and are said to be "abundant." Within the classroom, the "beyond helpful" professors are engaging and approachable, "willing to talk to you whenever you need it and [caring] about your wellbeing." Their "diversity of teaching styles," complemented by a variety of backgrounds, allows them to "bring their personal experiences into the classroom" and make classes "interesting and enjoyable." Students take note of these efforts: "the professors here at Assumption all love what they do, and it is obvious in the classroom." This level of support extends to all arms of the university, including the Academic Support Center (which provides tutoring) and the Career Development and Internship Center. As far as students are concerned, this level of care and support is "truly a blessing."

Location

Assumption University is located on a 185 acre private campus, nestled in a beautiful, residential neighborhood. When you step onto the campus you will feel the immediate sense of community.

The campus is just minutes from downtown Worcester, a bustling metropolitan mecca for the more than 35,000 students attending area colleges and universities. Businesses, government offices and nonprofit organizations provide our students with numerous internships and job opportunities. Assumption students also enjoy access to first-class restaurants and shops, museums, local sports teams and entertainment venues. Students enjoy the best of both worlds – a secure suburban setting with easy access to urban advantages.

Assumption offers a unique study abroad opportunity at its own campus in Rome, Italy. Staffed by full-time Assumption faculty, this semester-long experience lets students explore the country as a "living classroom."

Campus Facilities & Equipment

Assumption is dedicated to providing enhanced, or new, learning and student life facilities.

Construction is currently underway for a 41,000+ square foot health sciences building which will house Assumption's new health professions offerings, the nursing and physician assistant programs. Not only will this facility feature state-of-the-art equipment, students will also have access to clinical skills laboratories, simulations suites, and exam rooms.

The new Tsotsis Family Academic Center, a 60,000-square-foot state-of-the-art academic building, contains 13 high-tech, flexible classrooms, seminar rooms, common study spaces, a 400-seat performance hall, a rehearsal room, a multi-purpose space, faculty offices for the Assumption Core Texts and Enduring Questions Program, the Business Studies Department, the Honors Program, the Center for Teaching Excellence, and a new Center for the Study of Ethics.

More than half a million dollars in renovations were completed in Taylor Dining Hall, the primary dining facility on campus that offers students an array of meal options for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The 8,800-square-foot Tinsley Campus Ministry Center expands and enriches programs that contribute to the spiritual formation of students.

The campus of the University's top-ten ranked study abroad program in Rome, Italy, underwent a $1 million renovation, creating a modern living and learning environment for students spending a semester studying in Rome.

Off-Campus Opportunities

Assumption encourages students to expand their horizons. In addition to the Rome campus, undergraduates can spend a semester or a year studying abroad – from France and England, to Japan, the Czech Republic and Australia, to name a few locations. Many students also augment their education and hone professional skills through local, regional, national and international internships. Assumption students have worked at diverse organizations around the globe, from the Department of Commerce, Central America Bureau and the Department of State (NAFTA Agreement), to Smith Barney, Fidelity, Morgan Stanley, ABC News, and the Alliance Francaise in Paris.

What students say:

Students love their "beautiful, diverse, and secured campus," and 85% of attendees choose to remain on their picture-perfect campus thanks to a four-year housing guarantee. Assumption has "a tight-knit, faith-based community where everyone is part of a family" and students feel that "there is a great sense of belonging" that makes it "easy to meet new people," especially for those who are "very invested in academics, sports, extracurriculars, and social experiences." The town of Worcester, Massachusetts, is a New England college hub, so there is "always something to do if you want to get off campus" or want to socially mix with students at other nearby schools. This may actually be too true in some cases where students note that as the Thursday weekend rolls around, the on-campus scene gets quiet, with many of the older students heading off-campus, because Assumption is "strict as far as drinking goes." That said, students describe local activities "like Bingo Nights, movie nights, trivia, [and] Family Feud" as being "really fun."
